A 200 level student of the Department of Human Anatomy of University of Calabar lost her life at about 2 PM Nigerian time.
Eyewitness reports allege that she was rushed to the University of Calabar Clinic located at the main camp area of the school by her colleague students, with appendicitis complaints. On arrival at the clinic, the nurse on duty insisted that she must present or get a new medical card before she can be attended to; according to strict admittance conditions established by the school authorities. The said nurse is alleged to be a student nurse, as staff nurses only work on weekdays making way for student nurses to man the clinic on weekends.
Angry students who witnessed the sad situation insisted that the apprentice nurse must first save their suffering colleague’s life, promising to pay the card fee of 200 Naira.
As the ensuing argument continued, the ailing student couldn’t continue to fight for her dear life, as she gave up the ghost only 25 minutes after arriving at the clinic.
When the news of her death broke, students were seen in tears and angry at the school authorities for putting in place such stringent conditions that saw their fellow student’s young life ending abruptly because of 200 Naira.
Eyewitnesses at the scene of the event put total blame in the leadership of the school, insisting that the life of the student would have been saved if the clinic had an experienced nurse or doctor on duty.
Events of this nature calls for questioning of how safe the school environment is for students whose parents and guardians spend hard-earned monies to secure a better future for them through education in Nigerian Universities across the nation.
Unical must reassure Nigerians of their commitment to ensure that students return home alive, to the warmth embraced by their loved ones.
